Leakage
As custodians of water supplies for the North West of England, United Utilities is responsible for managing leakage effectively.
Sometimes nature makes this more challenging, as was seen in the winter of 2009/10, with freezing weather followed by a big thaw, making burst pipes inevitable.
The company took action immediately with more call handlers, operational teams responding to leaks in record time and by asking members of the public to report leaks with the ‘You spot it, we’ll stop it’ campaign.
Despite the coldest winter for years and record increases in the number of leaks and bursts impacting the water network, the company still achieved its leakage target for 2009/10.
